FROM YOUR HIGHLAND CORRESPONDENT

This will be my last post from the Highlands in this election. It’s been a strange one. Nothing I think is quite what it seems. The polls suggest an easy SNP win but there is a nervousness about the SNP campaign. It is evidenced by the bitterness amongst their leader and party loyalists towards ALBA. I think this is because Alba’s presence has forced a desperate SNP, anxious to bury Alba at birth, to go completely over the top with promoting the downright lie that somehow Alba, who are only contesting the list vote while urging supporters to vote SNP with their constituency vote, are responsible for the polls moving slightly away from the SNP. I would suggest that their own aggressive monstering of another pro Indy Party is a much more likely cause.

Hopelessly hooked on the both votes SNP lie, insisting this will not result in many hundreds of thousands of wasted votes electing nobody other than more Unionist Msp’s they must be increasingly worried about what happens on the 8th May when the truth is revealed and we will all know EXACTLY how many votes they squandered in their selfish pursuit on maintaining their political monopoly of the Independence message.

In the past that would not have mattered it would have been years to the next election, people would forget what happened. Maybe in the past that might have been true BUT here is the nightmare scenario.

Alba is successful and wins seats across the country. They point out how effective Alba votes were in electing pro Indy MSP’s but also highlight the gift to Unionism the SNP HANDED TO THE UNION by allowing, indeed encouraging, the pointless sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of second list votes even though they knew they would never elect a single pro Indy MSP. It will be quite the job to justify what they did after the count is completed.

I have been receiving a steady flow of messages from people who are still members of the SNP but who have been ignoring the increasing pleas to turn out to deliver leaflets. They tell me it is pretty desperate in many areas. They are managing to put up loads of posters but it is the Royal Mail that are doing the leaflet delivery. How very Tory are they becoming these days? The overdraft must be taking a hammering!

Nairn Today

Anyway my final fling in the Highlands brought back happy memories. Having being debarred from Party Politics for fifteen years due to holding my diplomatic post with Estonia it was great to get involved again in the most public fashion. Inverness was the ideal place, we had a great turnout, everyone in great spirits and a very happy positive mood was obvious. Now it’s hard to know what the response was but the number of folk flashing lights, pumping horns, giving us the thumbs up is anything to go by we certainly have support out there and they are confident enough of their vote to be happy to publicly demonstrate that support. I have always regarded that confidence as a good sign. It indicates they don’t think they are lone wolves in the contest.

We are now in the final lap, we must redouble our efforts, we have already achieved a great deal. A new Party, many thousands of new members, the creation and distribution of hundreds of thousands of leaflets, posters distributed, street stands, car cavalcades, new friendships made, new teams formed. It has been an enormous effort but just think how we will all feel if we defy the odds, pull off what the “experts” describe as impossible, confound the BBC ban and the MSM BLACKOUT and return ALBA MSP’s. A friend in the USA reminded me of Nelson Mandela’s words only this morning “ it always seems impossible, until it is done”. The polls are in conflict but I judge that we are above the threshold in many areas and on the margin in the others. That tells me that with a fair wind and our maximum efforts we can break double figures of ALBA MSP’s after the votes are counted on the 8th May. Now that would be a campaign success to dine out on for the rest of my life!

Do your best my friends. Our cause is just. Our message is true. Our country, which we all love will greatly benefit from our success. I know many people found it difficult to join ALBA after years of service campaigning and supporting the SNP. I will finish this article to THANK the stupid, bitter, twisted idiots in the SNP, whose bile and hatred has greatly eased that pain.

Many Alba members left friends behind, we still regard them as friends. It is to them this outpouring of hatred is having an effect. They greatly outnumber the fringe idiots responsible for this bile. There are a great many decent people still in the SNP. Many find it totally unacceptable and are embarrassed about it. It is a shame it has happened but when Nicola acts as she does then there is little hope any serious effort being made to bring it to a halt.

The VAST majority of Yes supporters have no interest in division and discord and I hope after the election it will be possible to restore some respect and harmony. At the moment however it is sadly missing. We have a huge battle to win Scotland’s Independence, it will be an easier task if we can all work together but the last few years have made it impossible for many to stay operating with just the one SNP vehicle. Another has been formed, it seeks to reach the same destination but plans a more focussed, direct route. We hope many will travel with us.

I am, as always

Yours for Scotland.

  1. That is very well said.

I’ve been leafleting in the Perth area, and its been very buttoned down.

Yesterday however I started to see more Alba posters going up, not a lot, but some. My gut is telling me its the trickle that will start the stream.

So, big day of leafletting today in Perth. Am away out to get started. Big thanks to all and any that are coming by the way. Makes a huge difference.

Meeting point is 1030 Asda Car Park, just behind McDonalds. 1300 hrs, same.

  2. The nasty bile from the Nicola true, loyal and blind brigade is not unexpected given the defamation and smearing is being led by the Dear Leader herself.

  3. A wonderful article Iain. You brought a wee tear to my eyes when you described how people felt when they walked away from the SNP. So true but you were right on target when you described howbthe viciousness from a small minority made it feel a lot better. I don’t see a change coming anytime soon. When the leadership trashes the values that the SNP has stood for, for many years, the nasty element get all the encouragement they need. As to their vote, watch this space. I suspect many like myself have voted SNP for the last time. I’m hoping that the next Scottish election will be one to elect the first parliament of an independent Scotland. SNP will find themselves with a much reduced vote in any case.
On a lighter note, I can’t wait for Alba’s first ever party conference. That is an event we can all look forward to.

  4. Great message and encouragement. Many still in the SNP have got the message and are not sheep. They are voting Alba, they are the silent ones.
However, how do we break through to the general public with this black out by the MSM?
I see this as the seed to take Alba forward. The public will see both the progress of Alba and the folly of wasted votes. They will see, from a majority SNP government, a lack of Indy action. Going forward, Alba need to get candidates ready for next years Council elections and hit the ground running. Build from the grass roots upward. Show we have competent Councillors, representing their communities, putting forward proposals to improve the lives of their constituents. Preparing the ground for the next Scottish election, hopefully in an Independent Scotland.

    1. I think the council elections will be when the SNP elite realise the wrath of the Yes movement. It’s single transferable vote and the ISP at least have signalled their intention of standing, having stood down their candidates this time. Since Satrap Sturgeon has over 6 and a half years presided over the formation of more pro indy parties than in the SNP’s history, she may find the SNP ranked second last (Greens last) of the (nominally in their cases!) independence parties on many ballot papers!

  5. Quick reminder point on polls, theyre there to sway and shape opinion more than guage it. People seem to be forgetting that.

    1. Another polling firm has put Alba high enough to win seats. Previously only Panelbase did. Now BMG/Herald has Alba on 4% and James Kelly of Scot Goes Pop says that translates into 2 seats. Let’s hope that is a gross underestimate. Unfortunately this polling predicts a SNP majority – something I hope doesn’t happen.

      1. But thats the thing. ALBA is new, so they haven’t a clue what’s going to happen. Hopefully it’s another one of those moments like snp got, noone expected SNP to break the system, and noone expects alba to break into the system. Byt my daddy taught me, always expect the unexpected. I think we may be pleased, snp not so much. Given Alex’s letter and her responses to Alba, snp have just made their own bed. I’m not lying in their bed any more. I’m loathe to vote for them after her refusal to go for indy if alba raise a motion. Petty and childish isn’t what scots need. And as a woman I need the snp changing society with gra and hate crime bills to protect men, like I need a hole in the head or lead behind the ear. Can’t even say I’ll give snp my first vote now. This weekend has kind of put pay to that. I’m looking at an independent and alba now. Snp isna getting getting the steam off my wee never mind my vote any more.

  6. “it always seems impossible, until it is done”.

The SNP leadership, the MSM, Polling, political debates, pundits etc etc. The entire machine is in top gear to convince voters that ALBA is a lost cause, a wasted vote. Please prove them wrong!

If the internal Party democracy can be ended by the current SNP leadership so easily, if the voices of the membership can be silenced so effectively, if Women’s Rights can be pushed aside so simply then I fear for my Nation that such a leadership can have a majority at Holyrood to determine our future.
My fear intensifies if a SNP/Green alliance dominates at Holyrood.

Under the scenarios above I will never see Independence and Women’s Rights will be crushed.

I have always dreamed of a Scottish Republic with the collective voices of Scots determining our future – Nae mair hi heidyins . I do not want an TV idol with an ego shaping Scotland without challenge.

  7. Same old thing for me tomorrow posting ALBA and SNP leaflets together through the doors- despairing every time I read more ALBA/SNP people criticising each other for criticising each other. It seems crazy- and hard to forgive. There are hundreds of thousands of us- just wanting to help Scotland win independence- left to guess for ourselves how to do that on Thursday. I wish the negative words wasted – especially by ALBA and SNP blogs- attacking each other- had focused instead on the Power Grab- the danger confronting Scotland.

    1. Most of the attacking is being done by the SNP and their wokeratti nicophants. Alba attacking snp by telling people to vote snp1, vs snp no I will tell my msps NOT to vote for any alba motion on independence. She doesn’t want attacking, then perhaps refrain from giving us the material. I presume you male so all the issues over gra, hate crime bill, sex education under snp to name but 3 issues that seriously have most wandering what the fk she is up to squandering our votes on things we didn’t vote for. We voted for a ref…where is it…its not attacking to point out failures and problems. However what snp have done is attack alba and scots from whichever telly appearance or twitter tweet they can. I’m frankly disgusted at her. But I’ve been paying attention, have you?

  8. I posted this on Facebook today in the hope that someone would share and get info to a few more people.:

With 4 days to go, having stomped round doorsteps with leaflets for days, the Alba team have done so much to gain support for Scotland’s independence. Thousands of people who marched (AUOB, not SNP, All Under One Banner), before Covid struck, have looked and listened carefully to what the SNP has said and done over the last few years, and decided to support Alba when it arrived on the scene as an option just a few weeks ago.
Alba is only providing candidates on the list vote, and recommend SNP support for the constituency vote. It’s a gamble because the number of party SMPs who are successful in the constituency vote will affect the outcome of the list vote. SNP pleas for vote 1 & 2 SNP might possibly recognise the drop in support for the SNP as a result of the lack of clarity with regard to their aims, and the list vote might boost any losses, but the SNP does not support independence, listen to Nicola, and Alba does.

Added to that is the sheer effrontery of the media to decide that Alba policies, which are entirely on the side of the Scottish people, should not be heard or seen by the people who would benefit most. All those people who marched will not see what Alba proposes, because a blanket decision to silence Alba has meant that the only way you will know what they propose is be reading the literature shoved through your letter box by people who think you have a right to know. But leaflets can’t tell you much. So if you think children deserve a better deal, look up the Alba poverty policy. And yes, it can be paid for.

This was written by an old campaigner yesterday:
“We are now in the final lap, we must redouble our efforts, we have already achieved a great deal. A new Party, many thousands of new members, the creation and distribution of hundreds of thousands of leaflets, posters distributed, street stands, car cavalcades, new friendships made, new teams formed. Now that would be a campaign success to dine out on for the rest of my life!”

Since the press and media won’t give the electorate a fair chance, can I ask you please to look up Alba’s manifesto and to share this post anyway. It’s disgraceful that I should have to ask. But if you don’t know what is on offer, how can you know what to choose?

  9. Well done that man. The problem is that Alba is peeing all over Nicola Sturgeon parade, she highjacks the Yes movement and then waved her Indiref2 carrot in front of their nose, the Alba party is not only a threat to her being FM but if the two do not join up after the 6th May, then a threat to the SNP party as a whole. It is a bit like when the SNP became the biggest party in the parliament Labour was miffed that the SNP had stollen their sweeties. She needs to wise up and make peace with Alba as a way to gain independence or step out of the heat of the kitchen.

  10. Hubby and I were there. Lovely drive from Inverness to Nairn and back through Beauly, Muir of Ord, Dingwall, Alness and Invergordon. Last photocall at Shore road Invergordon looking out onto the Cromarty Firth.
Happy smiling faces knowing we are doing what is right for the counrty and not for party.

  11. Really good turn out for Leafleting in North Muirton, Perth today, and good updates from colleagues who came for resupplies for their Highland Perthshire areas.

Got a laugh at seeing a John Swinney leaflet – no policies, just ‘vote for us to keep the tories out’, nothing about Brexit, nothing about Covid. Old, tired, lacklustre.

And his car doing the loudspeaker tour was no better. Driver looked dour as anything. Wee scone.

Speaking to quite a few folk in while leafletting, all are saying SNP1maybeAlba 2 def, but I almost laugh when I hear cultists saying we are wasting our votes, I remember folk saying that in 2007 when the SNP led their first administration(Before they changed the title to government) but I am extremely hopeful of one possibly 2 MSPs in each region
