ON WHAT SIDE ARE YOU?

A post from the Yours for Scotland regular columnist Mia.

ON WHAT SIDE ARE YOU?

For 6.5 years, the SNP has blown hot and cold on independence supporters.  We are beyond frustrated with their excuses. We are bored with their platitudes and cries of not having sufficient powers despite holding the power to end the union.

Since June 2016 we are being tortured by an SNP leadership happy to pocket our votes but who point blank refuses to give us the chance to vote for independence, being this in the form of a referendum or a plebiscite election. This despite having had more referendum mandates than fingers to count them with and as much as five elections they could have chosen from.

This SNP leadership has already undemocratically allowed our mandate from 2016 to expire. 6 years after we issued that mandate and still looks like legislation for the referendum is not in place yet. If this was meant to be a joke, it isn’t funny.

This SNP leadership has forced us to wait for a Brexit we never gave consent to.  We have been forced to wait for the unravelling of England’s negotiations with the EU when, despite having some of the largest majorities of pro indy MPs in Westminster and despite some of Scotland’s assets being offered as the biggest bargains in those negotiations, we were refused the opportunity to even have a say.

We have been refused a vote for independence with all manner of excuses that never seem to have been an obstacle for any other country in the world to conduct a democratic vote. Despite having us contributing to a fundraiser for a referendum years ago and getting600,000 pounds with it, this party has refused to start any serious pro-indy campaign to channel the yes movement’s energy and enthusiasm towards increasing support for independence. Instead is breaking its momentum by throwing us towards confusion and despair.

We have seen some pretend campaign attempts, but for as long as this leadership does not invigorate those campaigns with a date for the vote, they are a waste of time. How can you ever convince anyone things are going to improve if despite giving almost all our seats to pro-independence MPs and MSPs, absolutely nothing moves forward?

Not giving a defined date for a vote is setting any independence campaign to fail.  You can never manage a project successfully unless you give it a deadline. A testament of that is how this leadership has wasted our 2016 referendum mandate and every majority since May 2015. They left successive tory governments to be the only drivers to increase pro-indy support, they watched support for yes surpass 50% several times and let it fall again because the SNP leadership chooses to do nothing to boost that support and an awful lot to deflate it. Such flawed strategy can only be seen as pulling failures from the jaws of success.

It is like the party under this leadership has given up on Scotland’s independence, but for some reason, they still need us to believe they are going for it.

The SNP behaviour in the last few years seems more like an attempt to bring the yes momentum to a complete halt and to break the soul of yes supporters so they abandon all hopes for independence, than to actually pursue independence.  In a really bizarre turn of events, the SNP leadership actively removed the wheels of the SNP biggest ever predicted MP majorities before we even had the opportunity to vote for them. They did this by suggesting before every election that a vote for the party of independence was no longer a vote for independence.

Such action has only served to preserve the status quo.  You may be forgiven for making that mistake once, but five times?  That this was ever poor strategic decision making is no longer credible. There has been far too many opportunities (and years) to change course and mend the error. Yet, we are still on course of achieving nothing.

The party may have had an excuse to go soft on independence immediately after indyref 2014, but if you are really a party of independence, and you believe independence is the best for Scotland as we all thought the SNP did, the minute it was known the SNP was on course to win a colossal majority in Westminster, which was at least in March 2015, the narrative should have immediately changed towards independence. That is what any average strategist pursuing independence would have done.

The day England MPs trashed the idea of full fiscal autonomy for Scotland, and demonstrated that even having all our seats taken by pro-indy MPs would change absolutely nothing in that UK parliament, should have marked the point in history where either that majority was used to end the union leaving England’s parliament to England, or the party reverted to its original policy under which every single parliamentary election would become a plebiscite on independence, starting with the one in 2016.

We could have voted already for independence in the Holyrood elections in 2016 and 2021 and in the GEs 2017 and 2019. Instead, this leadership brings us with every election back to square one.

Unbelievably, today we find ourselves at the exact same point we were in March 2015. In the last few days it was announced, as it was a greatest thing ever, that the SNP is on course to win even more MPs in the next GE than they have today. Well, Whoopie Doo. 6.5 wasted years tell us that the SNP winning even all our seats will only be good thing if that election is declared a plebiscite on independence and the leadership actually delivers independence. Otherwise, voting for them will be as much a waste of our time as it has been for the previous 5 times.

If a vote for the party of independence, is not a vote for independence, what the hell is it for? A vote for the status quo that dragged us out of the EU against our will and that stole our powers? We don’t need the SNP for that, thank you.

Nothing that this leadership has done or said makes any sense at all unless you see them as a party that no longer pursues independence and instead it pursues something else. Then things start to make a lot of sense.

In summer 2020 senior members of the SNP turned on their own ranks, calling racists to yes supporters who were asking for the border with England to be temporarily closed. They wanted to protect the Scottish people by preventing the entry of new virus variants and their spread on the Scottish population. Only three years previously, we had the then Mayor of London, a Labour man, suggesting in a ill-advised speech that being a Scottish nationalist was akin to being a racist. There are tons of propaganda out there from British nationalists desperate to conflate support for independence with racism against the English people. Just like the words antisemitism and transphobia are misused to shut dissent in the political discourse, the anti-English racism card has been misused since 2014 by the British nationalists types to dishonestly deter the unconvinced from moving to yes.

If the SNP has begun to adopt labour’s and British nationalists bottom of the barrel tactics to deter yes supporters, it might be a symptom that the SNP is operating far too close to labour and does no longer remember on what side of the argument it was meant to be nor what it was meant to pursue.

Besides this, the optics of such reaction were confusing to say the least. They appeared to be suggesting that it was far more important for them to keep Scotland and England united at all costs than protecting the lives of the Scottish people. This is what you would expect from a party like labour. But it was diametrically opposed to what you would expect to hear from a nationalist party pursuing independence. You would expect a nationalist party to jump at the opportunity of flexing the muscles of country’s sovereignty and grab from the hands of the foreign power the control of the country’s borders. You expect a nationalist leader to push the boundaries of autonomy of the country outwards, not inwards as this situation was.

It felt like psychological taunting, exactly as watching woman’s rights being eroded by the SNP while it turns against its own ranks to force compliance.

This display of contempt for supporters makes one wonder if somehow the SNP feels their job has been done and their aim as party has been achieved, so they do no longer care if it alienates and divides its voting base.  SNP MPs behaving with such complacency for the status quo despite having in their hand the power to vacate those seats and revert the vote cast by Scotland’s MPs in 1706, gives you the unpleasant feeling that they ceased to pursue independence from the moment they had the opportunity to revert that historical vote, which was the 9th May 2015. What could have possibly happened that day that transformed our 56 pro-indy lions and MSPs into innocuous status-quo champions?

It is incongruences like those described above and the party’s apparent giving up the ghost of independence what brings back to mind Labour politicians’ past comments like this:

“We need to kill off the nationalists in Scotland and regain that great country.”

This comment was included in the speech to a Labour Conference in 2018 by the then Labour’s Chairman.  The person delivering the speech never actually meant to “kill” nationalists literally, of course, but what he was meaning was to find a way to end the yes movement and revert the support for independence.

Looking at the way the SNP has behaved since 2015, I have been actually wondering more often than not if the powers that be might have found a way to bring the SNP to heel and catch it in the UK establishment trap in such a successful way that they got them now trying to “killoff” (metaphorically speaking) the yes movement’s demands for independence, to help Labour “regain” control of Scotland’s seats.

There is an awful lot of talk of the “revival of Labour” in Scotland in some press quarters.  In fact, they have been talking about it since the SNP won for first time a Holyrood election, but never seems to materialise.

I do not think this urgency for resurrecting labour in Scotland is just about Labour winning back a few Westminster seats. I think it is really about resurrecting England’s bipartite political model in Scotland. That model started to disintegrate the day Mr Salmond entered Holyrood triumphant commanding the first minority SNP government. The day England MPs reneged on the vow and trashed the Sewel convention, the model entered free fall.

Why could be so important for the powers that be to rebuild England’s bipartite political model in Scotland?  I can see 4 reasons:

1) Because they can only stop independence if they remove from Scotland’s politics any political partywilling to give Scotland a vote on a plebiscite election

.2) Because if it becomes obvious both countries are politically too different, there is no longer a justification to keep the union.

3) Because labour and tory parties are so close that one cannot function without the other. You can only talk today about a “left” and a “right” if labour and Tories are standing side by side. If one goes down, the other one follows. That is why I think in 2015 all three unionist parties lost all but one seat each.

Mr Salmond’ SNP substituted England’s bipartite model (left and right) for another one where the divide is between parties who pursue independence and those that don’t. It is because of this that the tiny differences to the right or left between the three England parties are meaningless in Scotland’s context. This undermines the union every single day, which is a problem for those trying to secure international trade agreements and keep the image of being a stable world power.

4) Without Labour’s “revival” in Scotland the whole bipartite system in England is at risk. England is a tory country.  Tory corruption is protected by allowing every now and then a “labour” government to contain the electorate’s protest vote and to avoid making so obvious the bipartite model in England is really a one party system where labour enables rather than opposes tories. If labour is no longer seen by the English voters as capable to form government or a vehicle for their protest vote, an anti-establishment party could emerge to fill the very large vacuum tories and labour are leaving at the left. The corrupt system that maintains the elites in control with this bipartite model would be over in a matter of minutes. Do you remember the carnage UKIP did in England in so little time? Well, and those were tories hiding behind a purple flag. Imagine if all those hundreds of thousands members disenfranchised after the Blairites took over their party were to form an alternative one. England’s left hasn’t gone anywhere. The powers that be have just managed to silence them, for now.

I cannot say that in the last few years I have seen anything from the actions of the SNP that convinces me this party has not taken over Labour’s role: the mop that contains the flood of the protest vote. The apparently misplaced enthusiasm of the SNP for holding more general elections when, by not declaring them as plebiscites on independence they become tools to preserve the status quo, adds fuel to those doubts.

The complacency the SNP is displaying towards England’s governments and England MP’s helping themselves to our powers, feels as if we are being forced back to a time when Scotland still saw devolution as sustainable autonomy instead of a deceptive strategy to keep England MPs in control of our powers.

If the people of Scotland were content with devolution and being ruled by the governments England chooses,we would have voted Labour. But we haven’t. 2015 was when we were told for first time that voting SNP was not voting for independence, and when this embracement of full fiscal responsibility started. The last thing we need is labour to make a comeback in Scotland reincarnated as a rebranded SNP that, after it has crushed our hopes for independence and amused itself enough wasting our majorities, ditches independence as its main pursuit, without bothering to change its constitution, and instead champions a refurbished version of Gordon Brown’s Devo Max to the Max.

So what is it really that this SNP leadership is pursuing, the end of the union, some form of augmented devolution to preserve the status quo or they are just using SNP MPs to keep Scotland’s Westminster seats warm until they have to vacate them in preparation for that much trumpeted Labour revival?

MY COMMENT

Mia is calling on the SNP to be upfront and honest about their future proposals. This against a background of growing concern about the lack of progress. Distrust is growing and without some transparency and honesty that can only continue.

I am, as always

BEAT THE CENSORS

Sadly some sites had given up on being pro Indy sites and have decided to become merely pro SNP sites where any criticism of the Party Leader or opposition to the latest policy extremes, results in censorship being applied. This, in the rather over optimistic belief that this will suppress public discussion on such topics. My regular readers have expertly worked out that by regularly sharing articles on this site defeats that censorship and makes it all rather pointless. I really do appreciate such support and free speech in Scotland is remaining unaffected by their juvenile censorship. Indeed it is has become a symptom of weakness and guilt. Quite encouraging really.

  1. By stealth, deceit and lies, the Sturgeon led SNP has quietened the voice of the Yes movement, and the Green Party to become the only voice in Scotland, and by voting SNP you are only strengthening her power base. It is clear to all now that this is not a party to break up the Union but to become the established Unionist party in Scotland – The biggest threat to her power since 2015 has come with the introduction of the Alba party, see how quickly she and her press buddies moved to kill off that threat, even when it made sense that voting Alba on the list would keep the Tories out of Holyrood, she preferred the Tories to and opposition to her power. I am still convinced that many in the SNP would welcome (and wish) to see Alba represented in Holyrood, as allies not as opposition, begging the question “Where do YOU go from here?”

  2. “It is like the party under this leadership has given up on Scotland’s independence,”

They have and not just this leadership, the likely future leadership too.

“but for some reason, they still need us to believe they are going for it.”

Well those of us who want independence are hardly likely to vote for a closet devolutionary party are we. The only way to keep them on the gravy train in the vast majority of cases earning more than they ever could outside politics is for them to pretend they want independence. Many of the SNP’s newest members came from Labour. Why are they unable to see the parallels with “vote Labour for home rule and abolition of the House of Lords” and “vote SNP for independence” I do not know.

I disagree with Mia that they are keeping the seats warm for Labour – they’d never want to lose the short money, the excellent salary and expenses and actual gold plated pension. SNP MPs (and MSPs) are genuinely very keen to remain in their comfy sinecures thank you very much.

I am reminded of the fate of the Irish Parliamentary Party, perhaps someone should remind the SNP? Or perhaps they already did and that’s why the SNP are determined to destroy any and all alternative independence parties…

  3. Insightful piece, well done again Mia!

I think the emergence of a left-of-centre progressive party in England is almost a certainty now. The rouse of brexit has played itself out. The north-south divide (in England) was papered over temporarily by telling those of the working class that ‘foreigners’ were taking ‘their’ jobs. The promises of brexit will disintegrate in the coming months, if it hasn’t already.

Looking at the continued sky-rocketing house prices, it does seem that the northward migration is continuing at pace. The general election franchise, and a promise of some form of devo max from sir Kier, may well see a labour resurgence. Starmer is very palatable to the centre right.

Thinking about it, the SNP doesn’t need to devo max in its manifesto. It need only drop the odd hint to get Indy supporters to stay home (or split the vote) in 2024.

    1. Yes Sturgeon is throwing our best chance under a bus and there is no certainty it will come as easily again. We need to see the SNP erased in May and then maybe we will see Sturgeon gone.

As Scotland is effectively an elected dictatorship….
Frontpage of the National, more Johnson antics, indyref 2023? Covid update anyone?, Hassan on the end of Britain, again, Davidson resurrected, Sarwar shoots himself in the xxxxx….the perfect soporific.
    What a total waste.

  5. Excellent article from Mia.I can well remember the reaction at an SNP branch meeting when we were informed “this election is not about independence”.

On STV last night John Mackay posed some direct questions to Nicola Sturgeon and she did not look happy. Asked about the referendum in 2023 she became evasive when asked what steps were being taken right now given the parliamentary timetable is tight.

What a wonderful opportunity she had to promote independence without interference from others, she failed to take it. No longer the leader we need,

  6. Excellent article from Mia, as usual. The SNP will not get my vote again as long as Sturgeon is leader. Yes minded people have been cheated since 2015 by this charlatan. First vote Alba for me.

  7. Very well said in your usual articulate style Mia. It rather makes depressing reading though as the YES movement is on the back foot now. However one of the remarkable aspects of Scottish politics was the rapid decline of the Labour party in Scotland in recent years once the electorate realised how ineffective they were.
The same will happen to the SNP because as Abe put it ” You can not fool all of the people all of the time”. I do believe that the people of Scotland will rumble the SNP hypocrisy and their demise will match that of Labour.
To finish on an optimistic note, here are a few lines from the great English poet John Masefield…..
” I have seen flowers come in stony places
And kind deeds done by men with ugly faces
And the gold cup won by the worst horse at the races
    So I trust too.”

Onwards and upwards we will prevail in the end.

  8. Mia has very eloquently described what it means to be politically “hemmed-in”, to have nowhere to go, to be, in fact, a powerless colonised people! Without the appearance and robust intervention of the anti-colonialist, national party, the post 2014 re-britification of Scotland will continue apace, unhindered, and ably abetted by the SNP. The choices are stark: colonial fascism or national liberation.

    1. Of course, if NS believes that the power to have a referendum or a democratic vote for Scottish independence, rests with Westminster, then upon their refusal, her next logical step should be to approach the U.N. Obviously, she wouldn’t do that.

  9. Indyref 23?

Switch off the sound and just watch her eyes. I saw this excessive blinking at the Salmond review but it’s even more obvious now. Then the nonsense suggestion was that it was because of lighting (which only affected her and not a Salmond that was clearly suffering from a health issue at the time). Now it’s not just rapid blinking but full blown eyes shut at times as well. I’m not an expert but I’d say that this could be a prime example of someone lying that is unable to hide their awareness that they’re lying. Would you buy a used car from someone that looked like this when trying to sell you something?

    1. I watched the Stugeon video. No matter how hard I try I cannot imagine that performance fooled anyone…yet it did!
I can only pray that when the scales fall from their eyes it will be quite a dramatic step change in Scottish Politics.

The Independence betrayal is one thing but please keep a focus on the SNP, Green, LibDem and Labour Parties blind support of the TransCult. Don’t let MSPs hide behind Party policy. They are individuals and should be held accountable as individuals.
I hope when the GRA vote takes place at Holyrood that every blogger and Alba activist posts and reposts how our MSPs voted. I want that voting record to be kept in the public domain for a long time. No hiding from what they did to destroy Women’s Rights. The Risk to the Safety of Women and Children by providing this cover for predators and the destruction of Women’s Sport.

If they vote in support of the GRA Bill I want them to know that their individual vote will be visible for ever.

      1. Agree 100% with the sentiments as expressed Clootie. Holyrood is overrun by supporters of the trans cult and the Government would easily pass this legislation without the full support of SNP MSPs should any find the guts to oppose the First Ministers predilection for mixed sex spaces (very French).

All MSPs must be smoked out on their voting intentions when this Bill is introduced to Parliament and as you advocate, their association with a vote in favour must be broadcast loud and clear within the constituency and list areas they represent. To make that absolutely clear, they should ALL be made aware ahead of any vote that we the electorate reserve the right to expose those who would seek to deny our Women and young children safe spaces and protection in their time of need.

Further to that they must be made aware that any legislation that facilitates the destruction of young lives through the prescribing of puberty blockers and subsequently the physical mutilation of immature bodies will brand them as EVIL regardless of any deeply held religious conviction they might profess.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Clootie the only thing I would interject is that you cannot rule out support by abstention from the tories IMO they are reading the runes they previously supported GRA but they know the electorate are against it and when they are subjected to the truth of the outcome there will be HELL to pay and all the perverts and deviants within the SP will be outed

I emailed all my msp’s and mp’s with the link on For Women Scotland and asked their views , I have only recd 2 responses from Liebour 1 male 1 female and both are hedging their bets , but as usual the other troughers from all parties don’t respond to constituents

  11. 50% of the electorate will NEVER vote for unionist parties up here which means that Labour are finished north of the border in a FPTP voting system. They have zero chance of establishing a power base in Scotland. Along with the Tories and Lib Dems, the best they can hope for is the occasional crowing about a “revival” when they pick up 5 or 6 MPs. Changed days indeed.

Of course the pro-Yes 50% need somewhere to cast their vote and it suits the SNP nicely that they have the monopoly on this captive electorate. This is why they whine like spoiled bairns having to let someone else get a shot on the trampoline when another pro-indy party emerges. That’s a major threat to their position as the dominant political force at both Scottish and UK level.

What astonishes me is how quickly it’s become party before country for them. It’s obvious that Sturgeon is an impostor. Well, it’s obvious NOW. How did she rise through the ranks under the watchful eye of Alex Salmond without him noticing there was something untoward about her? Have WM really got something on her or is she just so personally ambitious that she’ll happily sell the rest of us down the river when she eventually gets the UN job that’ll be in the gift of the WM PM? How has she duped so many for so long?

It’s truly incredible that we find ourselves having to fight past the SNP before we even get near the massed ranks of the unionists.

  13. Spot on Mia the SNP under Sturgeon has achieved their goal but not ours their goal is to remain in power, our goal is independence as far as Sturgeon is concerned one is not compatible with the other in her eyes, how she can sleep at night I’ll never know, selling out an entire country for the benefit of her party and for the benefit of a foreign country.

I recall Sturgeon saying in an interview that Scotland doesn’t need to become an independent country to retain our distinctive Scottishness, this is of course false as our Scottishness in all its forms has been badly eroded as part of this union and our assets have been stolen since the 1707 Malt tax to North sea assets and beyond, even today we send millions of pounds per day to the coffers of Number Eleven Downing Street, money that could be used in Scotland to help Scots families during these tough times.

As for saying that folk from England are coming to Scotland in greater numbers than ever and influencing voting intentions, its not racist to speak the truth of the matter, Alasdair Gray was panned as anti-English a decade ago for saying the same thing.

Sturgeon will keep Scots subjugated to the whims of a foreign governments country for as long as she can.

    2. Just to add that by far the most important cultural aspect which gives ‘a people’ their distinctiveness (as well as their identity) is their language. In our case this is primarily the Scots language which according to the last census has just 1.6 million speakers, and Gaelic language speakers (50,000). This implies there are some 4 million people in Scotland, two-thirds of the population, who do not speak Scots or do not consider that they speak Scots.

The fact we do not yet have a Scots Language Act (language also being a human right) suggests this First Minister really has no idea of what ‘distinctive Scottishness’ even means, never mind its significance to the independence cause.

  14. What FM Sturgeon said, or implied, or whether he sought to deceive, is for each to view and judge.

What I have observed was a group of accusers – the jigsaw accusers – sought to send a 60 year old man to prison for ” he touched my hair” level of complaints. That FM Sturgeon failed to use her authority over these accusers – she employs them, they depend on her for their salaries – to stamp out these spurious complaints at source does cause me to question Sturgeon’s suitability, and recognition by her, of the gravity and the authority she holds in the position as First Minister.

I then witnessed a fullsome expressed willingness by Swinney MSP of the SNP to provide all requested data and correspondence to the Holyrood investigation committee over the Salmond business. And then I witnessed reams of delayed and redacted documents that the committee had requested.

And then I witnessed an “emotional” First Minister provide a long, long account to the committee, about a friendship lost, laced with vagueness and uncertainty about past events, of failing to remember past events, etc etc. Supporting documentation to her appearance? Zilch.

A failure to recall and explain in detail past events does fall well short of management requirements. I always kept a notebook.

And so I consider, thinking back to my previous career positions, Would I offer Nicola Sturgeon a position of responsibility?Could I reasonably expect her loyalty?

Words are only words I was cautioned. As for behavioural quirks – eye blinking, I have no expertise. As for malice aforethought.

And so my conclusion is that an opportunity to vote for independence vote, whether by referendum or by a Holyrood election will not happen whilst Sturgeon is First Minister.

  15. Thank you, Mia. A very astute and persuasive analysis of the current leadership position of the snp within the wider Westminster and UK political system. We need to separate the current cartoonish leadership and non-policies of “Scottish Labour” from their UK branch. UK Labour have certainly fulfilled the purpose of providing a home for protest votes against the Tories for many decades. Why have they never taken steps to e.g. abolish the House of Lords; curtail ownership of the media from control by billionaires who do not live or pay taxes in UK; impose taxes on the multi-nationals; abolish tax havens; take back control of the Tory privatised national resources; take serious steps to redistribute wealth; or tackle the housing crisis. Because they don’t want to, their remit is to obfuscate the above rather than expose and tackle the root issues. They talk progressive socialism but deliver nothing.

Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP has followed the same political strategy and trajectory. Used Independence as a campaigning tool but obfuscate the issues and undermine the movement at key breakthrough points. The backstage curtain has fallen open at points revealing the true motivation behind this current leadership i.e. supporting a second Brexit ref; cosy multi-party trips to the USA; preventing discussion of a Plan B and clumsy efforts to reject serious positions for highly regarded and respected reps such as Joanna Cherry and Joan McAlpine and imposing third rate candidates. Deflecting the independence debate to nonsensical efforts to deprive women of their sex based rights and safe spaces and more sinister support of removal of juries and prevention of protest at the Scottish Parliament.

What concerns me most, is where our MPs; MSPs and Councillors who support the organisation stand on this. It’s time to speak out. Take over the party and remove the leadership or move to Alba. Time to choose.

  16. Get out the Saltire flags, the pro-independence badges, t-shirts, posters etc and display them with determination.

SNP leaders will hate you doing so of course since, being political cowards, they must surely hate themselves.
