THINGS NOT GOING AS INTENDED.

I was initially very angry about the “threat” from seemingly six SNP MSP’s that if the membership elected anyone other than Humza Yousaf they would vote against the newly appointed leader perhaps even electing Anas Sarwar or Douglas Ross as First Minister.

Despicable, cowardly and disloyal to their Party? Sure, but it’s also a giant bluff.

It will never happen because to do so they would have to do it visibly. They would no longer be able to hide behind anonymity as their votes would be visible and recorded. They would instantly lose the whip and face dismissal as Party members.

This is the cowardly, dishonest and unprincipled caucus in the Parliament, a bunch of over privileged troughers tied to the gravy train which is always attractive to those who consider themselves talented and important, when in reality they are thick and irrelevant.

They are a burden to Humza’s campaign, and here I am doing him a favour by suggesting he knew nothing of his supporters little jape. Alternatively if he knew anything about this he needs to rein in his supporters. They are doing him no favours.

It is not the only mistake in his campaign. Others panicking when he was trailing well back in third place in the National readers online poll resulted to using bots to alter the voting system. This transformed his fortunes dramatically altering the one vote every 90+ seconds he was getting before the bot support, to an amazing 1.6 votes per second.

Subtle this was not. Very quickly he soared into the lead sometimes recording as much as 77% of the new votes being lodged, a huge increase on the 19% he recorded on day one.

I think they hoped nobody would notice but as the votes quickly totalled many times the entire circulation of the newspaper concerned, and by many multiples, just about everybody did. Concerned about getting caught I suspect they started using the bot for the other candidates as well seeking to make it a bit more believable but it was already far too late.

Mr Yousaf’s supporters were also at the forefront of the bullying campaign against Kate Forbes over her personal faith. It was despicable politics and did him considerable harm as properly conducted polls, compiled during the height of these attacks put Kate Forbes comfortably in front. Also interesting the latest poll is showing support for Ash Regan now also beginning to advance.

Now you would think that Humza would want to move on and get away from the personal attacks on Kate Forbes, a tactical move that he must surely be regretting as it allowed her to be seen as principled and honest, to the point where even the organisation representing his own faith came out in support for her principled position.

So when a former Minister came out and directly challenged Hamza’s version of why he had missed the vote on same sex marriage Humza should have said anything to lessen the damage short of lying. But no he lied. The result, what would have been a one day problem grew legs and the media, sensing blood, repeatedly asked him about it. Again he lied, this time these lies brought another two ex Ministers into the fray as they spoke to journalists confirming that it was Alex Neil’s version of events that was truthful. They say it is not the initial act that proves the most damaging but the lies and attempts to cover up that results in a disaster and that is what happened here. Who will put any trust in anything he says now?

It has taken less than a week but he now looks like a lame duck candidate and he has to now worry to look on as the next stage of the leadership race looks at each candidate’s record in office. I would suggest this will not be a pleasant experience either as he has more than a few problems defending each of the departments he has run from Transport, through Justice to Health. What they all have in common was they all had serious problems when he was their Minister.

Ash Regan has said one of her first priorities if she wins is “to put the right people in the right job”. What she means is she will end the “pals cabinet” that has led to poor Government as lightweight Ministers like Shirley Anne Somerville and Humza himself have been promoted way above their abilities. This has undoubtably led to the well deserved reputation of competency under Alex Salmond’s SNP to be lost. He filled his cabinet with the talent, the most capable, not always his closest allies. That is why it worked.

Now we don’t know for sure what the leaked emails will reveal but I would guess the only one of the three candidates that has anything to worry about is the appointed “continuity” candidate. Only a week ago that must have seemed a good tag to have, not so much now as he will be expected to defend whatever revelations are uncovered.

In conclusion as I was writing this article two things happened, the first was an Interview on STV News where Humza was calling for an end of discussion on religious beliefs, a clear sign he knows the damage it has done him rather than the intended target and then I watched the end of the blockbuster film Chariots of Fire about the Scottish Athlete who refused to run in the 100 metre final at the Olympic Games because it had been scheduled to be run on a Sunday and that was against his personal faith. He did run in the 400 metres and won the Gold. On his return he joined the missionary service and died tragically in China just after the end of WW2. As the film narrated all Scotland mourned his death. His name was Eric Liddell, a man of firm principle and faith, and he died a national hero.

Somehow, after the week we have just had, that seemed very appropriate and uplifting. I certainly found it so.

I am, as always

Yours for Scotland

BEAT THE CENSORS

Regretfully there are some among us who seek to censor what others read. Sadly within the YES movement there are sites which claim to be pro Indy but exist to only promote one Party and will not publish articles which come from bloggers who don’t slavishly support that Party to the exclusion of the rest of the YES movement. I ask readers who support free speech to share articles from Yours for Scotland as often as possible as this defeats the effectiveness of the censors.

FREE SUBSCRIPTIONS

Free subscriptions are available on the Home and Blog pages of this site. This allows, for an email of each article to your Inbox and that is now how several thousands get my articles each day. SALVO

The work and important development of Salvo has been a beacon of hope in 2022 and as it develops Salvo is creating campaigning hubs throughout Scotland. Salvo will join  with Liberation.Scot and as the campaigning arm of Liberation we are looking at very effective campaigns kicking off very early this year and introducing some new campaigning methods as well as those that have worked well in the past. This requires money so all donations to this site, once the running costs are covered, will go to support the work of Salvo/ Liberation. I think you will see it well used and effective.

LIBERATION.SCOT

We are seeking to build Liberation.Scot to at least 100,000 signatures just as quickly as we can. This is part of our plan to win recognition as an official Liberation Movement via the United Nations. We intend to internationalise our battle to win Independence and through the setting up of our Scottish National Congress will prepare and develop our arguments to win progress in the International Courts. Please help by signing up at Liberation.Scot. It is from those who sign up to Liberation.Scot that the membership of the SNC will be created by ballot.

  1. I wonder when the emails are going to be published. I certainly don’t want Craig to fall foul of the law again but he said they’d been legalled a while ago. All sorts of rumours flying about supposed “events” to occur this week, I wonder whether he’s decided to hold off???

As for Yousaf, the worst possible candidate, a lightweight, a surface politician. I’d prefer Ash but Kate will do. Both would need to be ruthless in clearing out the dead wood and the backstabbers. I do think Kate will win. I’m not keen on her right wing economics and I worry about her Cambridge education but I’ll settle for competence – it’s been a while since we’ve seen any at the top!

OMG is it amnesia , dementia or alzheimers most commenters on wings are suffering from

Whilst yeese are all busy discussing the integrity and honesty of Forbes and Regan and promoting their ability or otherwise to be FM and exposing the rank lies and immeasurable incompetence of Useless, may I take this moment to bring yeese back to earth by reminding you all that Forbes , Regan and Useless were all members of the Sturgeon Nonce Party with senior ministerial positions which made them part of the ROTTEN CLIQUE

Whilst Regan took a stand against the reviled GRR and resigned her ministerial position belatedly (hurrah, hurrah) where was the OUTRAGE and resignations when the VICHY DEVIANT SG was FORCIBLY introducing perverted questionnaires into our childrens schools , questions asking our kids if they had ever indulged in anal or oral sex, where was the OUTRAGE and resignations when DRAG QUEEN readings by dubious characters was promoted and introduced by an MP into childrens PRIMARY schools

Forbes and Regan both have children YET they stood by and remained SILENT whilst the head pervert and deviant introduced and promoted these abhorrent policies

IMO none of them have the integrity , honesty or bravery to lead Scotland to independence when they couldn’t even CHALLENGE or CONFRONT a deviant that was FORCING her deviant policies on to THEIR CHILDREN as well as ours

If ANY of the 3 had ANY INTEGRITY ,HONESTY or BRAVERY they would EXPOSE Sturgeon for the BETRAYAL she has wrought on Scotland and Scots
We have commented many times that the snp is FULL of craven cowards not one of them proved us wrong

Are we so desperate for independence that we will WORSHIP another false god

      2. I am not in the false god business and it would be good if there was a candidate with a long record of honesty and courage but let’s be fair. Ash Regan did show principle and bravery and resigned as a Minister over GRR. LIKEWISE Kate Forbes was not in the Cabinet as Finance Minister when the Salmond shenanigans were being pursued. That was a tight group at the very top. Neither of them were privy to the documents that were withheld or the plotting that was going on. I think we need to look forward not back in this instance.

    1. “I’ll settle for competence”

A ‘competent’ colonial administration will not necessarily liberate the people. ‘Competent’ governance is in any event a forlorn hope in a colonial society which is constantly being plundered and undermined, and remains controlled and run by a cultural hegemony based on a ‘cultural division of labour’ which only acts ‘to protect the interest of the colonizer’. In other words, our ‘mediocre meritocracy’ will be with us until we are independent.

I recently learned that many remaining SNP members are ‘over 50 and middle class’. This is perhaps one of the reasons for the party’s ‘hesitation’ at the final hurdle; in postcolonial theory the bourgeoisie always ‘protect their privileges’ and end up seeking a ‘compromise with colonialism’. Liberation depends on the support of the ‘lumpen proletariat’, the very people who have been deceived by the party leadership.

It remains that only one of the three SNP candidates has independence on their mind and therefore an understanding of what independence means and why it is urgent – Ash Regan.

      1. It’s not that I disagree with you Alf, but if I’m lumbered with a colonial administration and the two front runners are devolutionists I’d rather the competent one won than the incompetent one! Of course I’d MUCH rather an independence focussed candidate won!

      2. It very much seems that Ash Regan is the one who will put independence on the front burner and will seek to unify the movement under one big tent.

Kate Forbes by comparison, good as she may be, is very much right wing, doesn’t think that the time for independence is now but maybe two or three years away when the economics for Scotland are better. If we are waiting for the Westminster Tories to improve our economic lot whilst they reduce our pretend parliament to a parish council, then I’m afraid we will wait a long time. A long long long time.

So of the two Ash would be my choice. Time for change, time to get our movement back on track and she says that is what she’ll do.

  2. Humza Yousaf describes himself as the ‘stability’ and ‘continuity’ candidate … precisely what is NOT required.

    He is the devolutionist’s devolutionist.

The SNP was founded as a revolutionary party as its overarching aim was, and still is according to its charter, to return Scotland to full self-government thus breaking the British Union.

Mr Yousaf should familiarise himself with that aim – it can be found in article 2a of the SNP’s constitution.

  3. Continuity Candidate!

Two C’s. Consonants I think they are called. But what words also begin with C.

    Here are a few –

    – cronyism
    – corrupt
    – cabal
    – cheating
    – concealing
    – conniving
    – criminal

All words that accurately describe the attributes of the continuity candidate. But none maybe more so than…. Chump.

Humza Chump, it’s got a ring to it.

That’s it. Analysis over. He’s dead man walking.

If Yousaf’s campaign is floundering, this leaves one, big question.
Will wee sleekit Peter Murrell, mendacious Sue Ruddick, deceitful Ian McCann, et al, “do a Colonel Gaddafi” and just declare Yousaf to have “won by a landslide”?
Are there still whistleblowers quietly monitoring events at Party HQ?

The campaign has a Wiki page.
Scroll to near the bottom and there’s lists of endorsements.
So far committed among the MPs, there’s 12 for Yousaf, two for Forbes and zero for Regan. £84k pa it seems buys a conscience these days.
Among MSPs Yousaf has 19 endorsements against seven for Forbes and zero for Regan.
Kinda makes it easy to nail the devolutionist traitors.

  5. So I wonder what they will throw at the two ladies this week ? Had a chat with a staunch SNP supporter yesterday and even he does not want Humza to get the top job. He is an SNP1 and SNP2 man and until recently thought the party leader walked on water and still can’t process why she is stepping down. He is a highly paid , intelligent man but has a blind spot when it comes to the SNP. He has no time for Alba and had never heard of Salvo and even when I tried to tell him what they were about he dismissed it out of hand. It is going to be a struggle to change the opinion of people like him if we are to win independence.

    Liked by 15 people

    1. The tactic seems to be to monster Kate Forbes on grounds of religion and Ash Regan as an Alba stooge. The attack on Forbes seems to have backfired (maybe people respect honesty in a politician – who’da thunk it?) but it remains to be seen how Regan survives the dual taint of Albaism and wanting to do something about independence! It seems tolerance is in very short supply in today’s SNP – how ironic that they demand it of everyone else.

  6. Humza the gift for the Union. He said on TV that he wanted the voters to vote for Independence in every election and then stated that he wanted the opinion polls to show a majority in support of Independence over a long period of time and the next Westminster election will just be a normal election!

So basically, if the voters vote for the SNP it isn’t for Independence its to continue monitoring the opinion polls, polls can be rigged.

If this man is elected in 8yrs or sooner, all that will happen is the SNP will have to elect another FM because he’ll be forced to step down for a multiple of reasons and the SNP will not win or come close to winning another Holyrood election.

Labour success in the polls isn’t because Labour is the new guardian of Scottish politics, its simply because the SNP have kept promising to delivery Scotland a better way of life with Independence and promise after promise to keep Scotland in the EU and never delivery it. Even Business for Scotland has given up on the SNP as they don’t see them as a political party who can delivery what they promise and this is the reason the Labour party will win in Scotland, if there isn’t any hope of Humza Yousaf delivery Independence because of the opinion polls then why wouldn’t the voters vote for Labour.

Ash Regan to me is the person Scotland so desperately needs to move things along, her words on Independence is the right way forward.

People are starting to realize that a vote for the SNP isn’t a vote for Independence its a vote for continuity and this is what Humza Yousaf offering the SNP member.

    1. Not sure it is that complicated. For a while if you put an SNP badge on a turnip or a turd it would get a lot of votes as rightly or wrongly a lot of punters seem to think SNP stand for Indy. Our council election hustings was hosted online and being a sad wee soul I watched it. Two SNP badged potential cooncillors and the usual suspects. One SNP candidate was impressive the other as the evening wore on his speech became slurred and eventually he nodded off so it was not tea in the mug he was sipping from. Both got elected which brought home to me how a lot of voters just vote for the badge and do not pay attention. To be fair to the badge voters at least they got off their backsides and voted which a lot of people do not do whether through apathy or the fact that so many of our politicians are a complete turn off. I suspect the gender nonsense will have turned off a lot of potential SNP voters so unless Ash or Kate can win the day and re-engage the punters the SNP are Donald Ducked as they say in the Gaelic.

  8. When I joined the SNP way back in 1967, “devolution” was not even in our vocabulary. A “half-way house” situation was vaguely around then but no-one that I knew gave that any credence as a viable option.

While the unionists saw Holyrood as a method of undermining those nasty nationalists, it did not quite work out that way and the start was the Labour Party taking their Scottish voters for granted.

Now we have the SNP in a similar situation because I did not join that party to obtain a never-ending halfway situation. Following the resignation of the FM, there came the opportunity to push independence, which is after all the number one Aim of their Constitution, back where it belongs at the forefront of all that the SNP says and does.

However, I am dismayed that there are still those within the SNP that are happy and comfortable with what Scotland has been allowed by Westminster – even worse that those views can be found in the leadership campaign.

Did they not fully realise or understand the 2 judgements from the UK Supreme Court where they used section 28/7 of the Scotland Act 1998 to reinforce the right of Westminster to make laws for Scotland and that any interference, by the UKSC, as happened in October 2021 and November 2022 perfectly illustrated the veto that Westminster has over ANY law passed at Holyrood. Quite why the SNP challenged Westminster’s decision not to issue a Section 30 Order was a complete waste of time, energy and money because the UKSC could not possibly come to any other conclusion.

Following on from that, we had the Secretary of State for Scotland using a Section 35 Order to prevent Royal Assent for the GRR Bill. No matter which side of that issue people stand, it surely showed how Westminster views the actions of its bastard child of Holyrood. Now we are hearing that Westminster through its Secretary of State is about to use another section 35 Order to prevent Holyrood’s bottle deposit return scheme.

So, quite why the SNP and its MPs and MSPs recently appear to be happy with the status quo of devolution and for any candidate in the leadership election to be considered a “Continuity Candidate” is indicative of how far the party has fallen from the road to independence.

    Liked by 16 people

    1. I’m quite sure that Sturgeon knew that the Supreme Court would reject her application. She’s a lawyer for goodness sake. Maybe not a good one but a lawyer nevertheless. It was just another step in the long road of betrayal she has trodden since she became FM.

This could all backfire on her and her masters though. We now know if we didn’t know before, that appealing to Westminster for anything is a waste of time. So we must take another route using international law. Sara Salyers may have the answer. I believe that is the way to go.

  9. I like the fact that a spectacular miss has been made against Kate Forbes and the person with egg on his face is the ‘ continuity’ candidate – or as I prefer to put it ‘ mair o’ the same mince’ candidate.

I watched Chariots of Fire too – hadn’t seen it since it first hit the cinemas – Eric Lidell was heroic .

    Liked by 12 people

    1. “Eric Lidell was heroic ”

Liddell’s background seemed very ‘British Empire’ and middle class in which involvement as teaching missionaries promoting ‘English Studies’, christianity and ‘British values’ formed a prominent cultural role in all of Britain’s colonies globally. Liddell was born and lived mostly in China, educated in London, and briefly at Edin Uni, which even by the 1920s was itself a very elite ‘British’ rather than Scottish institution, as is still the case. Hence a rather bourgeois and British cultural/colonial background which, although ‘principled’ in a Christian sense, also explains his lack of interest or emphasis in our peoples quest for equality and liberation from oppression. In the film it was said he was ‘proud of his country’ but like most of the privileged Scottish bourgeoisie, which country was he referring to?

Kate Forbes background has some interesting parallels, with much of her early years spent in India where her father was involved in religious charity and health work. She finished her senior schooling in leafy Dingwall, followed by attending two of Britain’s most elite institutions – Cambridge and Edin Uni. Hardly the basis for developing a radical nationalist mind intent on liberating the Scots.

Despite Forbes’ principled Christian stance, I fail to see any real depth of understanding here of the wretchedness and inequalities faced by most Scots or our exploited colonial situation as the urgent raison detre of independence. Perhaps more the SNP ‘racket’ offering a recent history graduate a career opportunity, ideal for the privileged and ‘articulate’ middle class? Forbes’ recent record on Scotwind giveaway, Freeport tax havens, S.30 blind alley, and her GRR vote avoidance, etc etc tells its own story regarding her dominant political ideology and objectives – i.e. further exploitation of Scotland.

Forbes role here is arguably to take the more ‘conservative’ SNP members votes away from Regan, which only helps Yousaf. Yousaf and Forbes, neither of whom are Scottish nationalists, are as one on a S.30 blind alley and snail pace to indy leaving Scotland continuing to be plundered and perishing. This is a two horse race, promoting two quite different political ideologies, with Forbes merely a stalking horse standing behind one of them.

      1. I would like Ash Regan and Kate Forbes – appealing to a wider Scottish public. I see nothing appealing in the ‘continuity ‘ candidate.

I see the interfering, destructive British Empire and the annoying, arrogant interference of religion but Eric Lidell was a man of that time and a man who lived by his beliefs. I was brought up to believe in King/ Queen and country – it took me time , a deal of reading and observation to reach the conclusion that ‘we’ as in the British Empire were horrendous thugs – and remain so. Tolerant? Generous ? Nah.
So in many ways you are preaching to the converted but I remain impressed by a man who put his God before mere man and had a practical ,hands on mission which ultimately killed him – and he was fast too!

      4. You are perhaps right, Iain. I was however mainly interested in the social background parallels as well as the similar christian principles of Liddell and Forbes.

The rugby aspect also interests me. A peoples’ national identity and national consciousness (which is based on their culture and language) is known to be a critical feature in relation to national liberation movement solidarity. Often this national consciousness is most notably demonstrated in the propensity of a people to display their national flag, as we see at AUOB marches, and national celebrations (which are kept to a minimum in a colony).

At national football matches at Hampden the national flag tends to be waved in the thousands, and mostly attended by the working class who are happy to celebrate our national identity:

        https://historyindoors.co.uk/the-use-of-history-in-football/

Yet saltires are hardly to be seen, if at all, on the Murrayfield terraces, the latter mainly attended by the middle class, who evidently appear less keen to celebrate our national identity:

        https://www.euansguide.com/news/accessible-six-nations/

This illustration may be broadly reflective of the cultural/social groups in the Yes/No divide, highlighting specific native groups that are for and against independence within a colonial society based on differences in their dominant culture and identity, the latter influenced by ongoing ‘cultural assimilation’ processes.

  11. I have a couple of comments on the current situation. I joined the SNP in the mid-60’s. I am to the left of Humza Yusaf and Kate Forbes. I am no longer an SNP member but am still an active Yesser. The members of my Yes group are all in the same sort of place on the spectrum of political preferences. While they are by no means as old as me, they are of mature years. I wonder if those of us who left in recent years have taken with us a big group of older people, who, had they remained would be voting for Ash Regan while rejecting the views of the group who occupy the leader roles at the moment?
If the remaining membership is more middle class than has been previously thought, is it really such a bad thing? If I remember my history correctly, was the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution led by middle class people? They galvanised and used the discontent of the masses to mount a revolution against the status quo. In Scotland do we just need a platform for the relatively few activists to educate and inform the wider population, i.e. do what the SNP should have been doing since 2014 and have so catastrophically failed to do.
I note that Humza Yusaf has suggested that he will set up a regional system of paid individuals to organise the Yes campaign. My initial reaction was “What an insult to those who have spent a lot of time organising and delivering the Yes campaign.” Do we really need a paid individual to sit in an office and direct activists on how, where and when to campaign? Or is it a case of (more) well-paid jobs for the in-clique?
The current situation just gets more bizarre by the day. The MSM are having a field day celebrating the demise of the SNP and the Independence movement. I think this just goes to prove that when a London-centric media comments on Scotland and what Scots think, they are exposing their own ignorance and lack of understanding of how differently Scots think about what is important for society from the way England thinks about these things.
I’m 75. Time for me to have a little rest after my rant.

  12. Yousaf as FM will see no change we’ll just carry on as though nothing happened, oh and he wants to remain in government with the Greens.

Alex Neil showed that Yousaf deliberately missed the vote on same sex marriage, Craig Murray pointed out being an ex-UK ambassador that he’d (Yousaf) would’ve had someone from justice with him at the “supposed” meeting and that there would have been minutes of that meeting as well, neither have been forthcoming.

I f Yousaf wins Sturgeon and Murrell will breathe a huge sigh of relief and nothing will change, we need Ash Regan to win then change will come.

  13. America used to be very hung up about sex. It was the land of puritan attitudes. It has since swung violently in the opposite direction. Countries that were equally prim in Europe have done likewise.
Northerners used to escape south to Italy, Tunisia or Egypt to have their adventures and generally found their tastes to be discreetly well catered for. No questions asked and usually no feelings of guilt,
Unfortunately, the American Way of Sex with its emphasis on pornography, bizarre practices and instant gratification has changed that.
These once «at ease» lands have become as uptight as below the liberated shell these former puritans probably still are. Males holding hands etc used to be a normal friendship attitude in the MiddleEast now it is associated with being a westernized gay so few young people do it any more.
I do hope the independence party will free itself from being a locomotive for transgender sex activism.

  14. I enjoyed this interview with Ash Regan which IndyScotNews put up on YouTube. Note the frustration in the interviewer’s voice.

Indeed. But she had a walk in the park compared with Kate Forbes’ treatment by the same Guisler whose aggression was borderline thuggery.

  15. Am I missing something? Do people not want independence? There is only ONE candidate offering Independence…nothing less! The setting up of an Independence Convention and uniting the independence movement working with like minded Parties and groups to achieve independence. The other two candidates are not offering that, they are not offering anything like that, so why would you consider any of the others if you really want independence???? Unfortunately a vote for KF is a vote for devolution and more of the same “jam tomorrow”. Jesus! The “can” must be exasperated as it has been getting kicked down the road since 2014 ( a bloody long and wrong road ) and that will continue if you don’t take the offer of Independence…nothing less! that Ash Regan is handing you on a plate. I despair.
