YOU ARE INVITED TO SUMMER 2014

Can you remember that time?. The spirit and ambition. The unity and determination. How those qualities drove the Independence cause forward and the polls reported steady progress and the panic amongst the Unionists rose to epidemic levels.

All this caused by a United campaign as all strands of the Yes Movement, official and unofficial came together and the people of Scotland, or to use the phrase of the moment “the sma folk” raised their hopes, abandoned years of frustration and apathy and genuinely believed things could change. There could be a better, fairer Scotland. For themselves Yes,  but overwhelmingly for their children, they wanted that better Scotland.

We came close, but in those last few days, the UK Government broke the rules, broke Purdah and created new promises and pledges. Working with the Daily Record they once again lied to many Scots with the infamous Vow that promised Scotland all sorts of new powers and benefits. There was no need to vote for Independence as the most powerful devolved Parliament was Scotland’s for the asking. We were also reminded if we wanted to stay in the EU and Single Market then that could also only be secured by voting No. What a lie that turned out to be. 2021 and we are out the Single Market and Scotland’s powers are being reduced, removed.

After the vote, the very next day the UK GOVERNMENT acted, not to implement the vow, no they introduced English Votes for English laws, debarring Scots MP’s voting on a wide range of English issues while leaving English MP’s free to vote on Scottish issues. Even when the SNP held 56 of 59 Scottish seats, they could be outvoted anytime by the required number of English MP’s sitting on the committee dealing with Scottish affairs.

Now almost seven full years later, Independence has been stalled pretty much where it was in the autumn of 2014. The SNP have secured further mandates but have no idea or plan how to use them. Ian Blackford in particular made strong statement, after strong statement promising Scotland would not be dragged out the Single Market. Until Scotland was dragged out the Single Market against Scotland’s wishes. Then the SNP finally acted. They stopped making any speeches promising any action. It was a humiliation.

The cycle continues as it will for years more if nothing is done. Give us a mandate, put it in the cupboard for use at the “right time”. Assure everyone there is a secret plan. Years pass, it is never the right time. When folk demand to know the plan, add a few more points on and make more promises about action, but take none. Before you know it’s time for another mandate and the useless cycle continues.

Not this time it doesn’t. The position has changed. A sizeable part of the YES movement has had enough of the pointless and ineffective posturing. ALBA has been formed and is intent on bringing Independence campaigning alive again in Scotland.

Despite being less than three weeks old it has already turned this into an Independence election with the exciting idea of creating a Supermajority at Holyrood that transforms the debate. That proposes starting Independence negotiations on the 7th May.

The most exciting thing though is the spirit of Summer 2014 is being recreated. Here is a Party, a movement totally focussed on Independence, prepared to put in huge efforts across the country, hoping to deliver not for ourselves but for the community of Scotland recreating the hope, the inspiration, the determination to be successful. Restoring to the poor and disenfranchised a belief that we can change Scotland  for the better. We are eliminating apathy and replacing it with energy and hope.

Here is an interesting statistic, the normal ratio of activist/ members of a political party is between 10-15%. Alba organisers are telling me with Alba it is around 80% and we will need every one of them. That is the spirit of 2014 I am writing about.

Make no mistake, we know what a gigantic task we face, the incredibly short timescale available to deliver, but you know something, I think we will do it. Why, because we must, if not us who? If not now, when?

Scotland is at the crossroads, the Independence cause currently moves forward, if at all, at a snails pace. All around we witness Westminster moving steadily and at increasing pace, removing powers and erecting obstacles that our current leadership seem unable or unwilling to contest or defeat. The outlook is exceedingly bleak if our only hopes are in the hands of those who lack ambition and the courage to open up a whole range of different opportunities that are available to us but that require real determination and yes, risk, but which can be spectacularly successful. Calculated risk is an essential ingredient in winning a nation’s freedom. Much more effective than timidity and fear. There are huge, much bigger risks in doing nothing, more building up every day! Your position just weakens. That is what is happening at the moment.

ALBA HAS A PLAN. A REAL ONE THAT EXISTS. THAT CAN BE DELIVERED QUICKLY AFTER THE 6th May by a Parliament that has a Supermajority. A United Parliament seeking Independence.

Who can make it happen? Well that is you, the “sma folk” of Scotland. You need to come together quickly, this week, you need to contact Alba at http://www.albaparty.org and volunteer to join our campaign. Relive the spirit of 2014 or if you were too young then join in now and experience the joy and pleasure of being part of something bigger and better than any of us and which can deliver so much for your family and fellow citizens and friends.

Be part of it

I am, as always

Yours for Scotland.

  1. Dear Iain,

thanks for your enlivening post, and I quote your words:
“Calculated risk is an essential ingredient in winning a nation’s freedom”, which accurately sums up your heartfelt article, which will enhearten all who seek to restore Scotland’s independence; “Saor(aibh) Alba!” = Free Scotland!

      1. Loss of sovereignty of a people is aye a maist awfu maitter, like a death, followed as it is by the inevitable replacing of their culture, their languages, the imposition of a cultural division of labour favouring the oppressor group which drives and demands inequality, and leading to the draining of the confidence of an entire people.

The many deceits leading to the giving away of our national sovereignty again in 2014 offers us an indication of how the ‘sma fowk’ must have similarly felt in 1707. ‘Greetin’ is mebbe an understatement; thon wis mair lik the daith o oor verra sauls. This loss of sovereignty leaves a people ‘zombie-like’ as their assimilation continues unabated and their culture and being is removed and dissipates into the ether.

So I suppose the regaining of sovereignty and liberation must be a joyous affair. Whit a day that’ll be!

        #Supermajority = Sovereignty reclaimed

  3. That’s a first for me. I tried to retweet your post Jim and got a message saying “Twitter is over capacity, try again. . . “
Anyway, I remember Alex saying, “if not us, then who, if not now then when?” during the indyref1 campaign. His words struck a chord with me then, seeing them again, when we are at a crossroads in the movement, set off a whole orchestra! Sleeves rolled up, ready to do whatever it takes to send our candidates to Holyrood in 19 days.

  4. I didn’t work hard through 2012 to 2014 so Peter Murrel could live a wealthy lifestyle

I didn’t go through the pain of Sept2014 so that Nicola Sturgeon could empower a handful of men to replace “Women” and to change our language relating to Women and Motherhood to suit their demands.

I didn’t campaign and vote for the SNP in the years after to have my voice ignored by the Party.

I wanted Independence in 2014. I still want Independence. The Murrells changed the SNP into a cult and business unit. I didn’t get any say BUT they still took my money.

Our children’s future is at stake in MANY, MANY ways.

ALBA and a Supermajority is the way forward for Scotland.

  5. Hi Iain. This PDF file is an important read for all Indy supporters. It was compiled by the guy who put together the Edinburgh agreement. It’s a long read, but is so important that people read it & also share the length & breadth of the country. repost it all over face book & twitter. Show people how inportant Maxing the yes is in keeping your parliament. It really could be in real danger.
Can someone make sure Alex Salmond also sees this. Thanks.

    1. I think it is worth giving people full information and links.

This paper and associated lecture were released on tuesday and are worth consideration as they address relevant issues.

“Resist, reform or re-run: short- and long-term reflections on Scotland and independence referendums”

      https://www.bsg.ox.ac.uk/research/publications/resist-reform-or-re-run-short-and-long-term-reflections-scotland-and

      ABSTRACT:
“In this paper Ciaran Martin, Professor of Practice in the Management of Public Organisations at the Blavatnik School of Government, delves into the constitutional issues related to a Scottish independence referendum, drawing on direct personal experience from the 2014 referendum and the negotiations preceding it.

The author argues that there could be a potential clash between the mandate of the Scottish electorate on the one hand, and the laws of the United Kingdom as a whole on the other, over the question of whether to hold a further referendum (in 2014 Scottish people voted to remain in the United Kingdom by a margin of 55 to 45 per cent).

“The paper includes a foreword by Sir Tom Devine, Scotland’s leading historian and Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh.

Watch the launch lecture with Ciaran Martin, Sir Tom Devine and Ngaire Woods.

      1. This is arguably just more colonial-biased mystification nonsense by ex UK senior civil servants and politicians who far too often end up in cosy academic positions giving them academic status they hardly merit. It sounds (and is read out) rather more like at best a postgrad viva, which is reflected to some extent in its relatively limited scientific literature and methodological basis, and also in some of Tom Devine’s comments on it (though Devine’s call for Scotland’s ‘administrative Power’ to conduct itself in “a civilised and honest manner” seems rather a forlorn hope given past experience, though perhaps he was joking).

Much as we see reflected in the ALBA Party strategy, the reality of the situation is that the actual socio-political determinants of Scottish independence are considerably more than simply the matter of another dubious referendum (or any need for one as a matter of law), or in what any UK political administration or English university institute may think is the best solution for the people and territory of Scotland to be somehow or other retained (i.e. ‘held tight’) within the UK.

  6. The only bit I disagree with is: “Now almost seven full years later, Independence has been stalled pretty much where it was in the autumn of 2014.”

We’re now fighting some of our own as well and they’re proving to be even more vicious than Better Together ever were.

  7. LOVELY WORDS BUT!!!

Here is an interesting statistic, the normal ratio of activist/ members of a political party is between 10-15%. Alba organisers are telling me with Alba it is around 80% and we will need every one of them. That is the spirit of 2014 I am writing about.

Volunteered again and again, even to the people standing in my region Central Scotland got an email back from a few but that looks like an automated reply 😦 Left a few voicemails saying please contact me ASAP ……not one reply NOTHING!!!!

YES I get automated replies thanking me for volunteering BUT NO FOLLOW UP 😦

THIS IS NOT some war we can win with the ALBA troops charging at the enemy line on Election Day.

FFS START using these troops, these active members, NOW!!!!!

STILL sitting totally and completely frustrated with nothing to distribute to the people who don’t come online to talk about independence and the people that we must persuade to maximise the number of ALBA MSP’s

Make no mistake, we know what a gigantic task we face, the incredibly short timescale available to deliver, but you know something, I think we will do it.

    NOT HAPPING ON THE GROUND

I have still no contact from anyone in ALBA re getting info out to the people we need to educate and have vote ALBA on the list.

Scotland is at the crossroads, the Independence cause currently moves forward, if at all, at a snails pace.

YES so true at a SNAILS PACE and that is so frustrating i

If WoS can produce the Wee Blue Book and have many thousands and thousands of them distributed by activists well before the day they were needed who in ALBA is doing anything similar?

Extremely sadly NOT even a simple hand out available to distribute today 😦

    This is NOT Rocket Science

A simple two sided hand out

Side one explains the two voting papers FPTP and AMS /List and DHondt

Side two asks do you want Independence and follows with did you vote SNP on the list last time

and is unique to the region and shows the last AMS/list votes figures

and explains ?????? number of YOUR votes wasted plus how few votes it took to get a unionist elected

A second hand out will be needed with the candidates listed and some key reasons for voting ALBA

PLEASE can we have SOMETHING SOON!!!!!

  8. I am in Mid Scotland, had the same problem, got an e-mail last night, they’ve been swamped and they’re working their way through them.

Leaflets out next week in my area.

One thing they need to do – Iain if your listening can you pass it on…

MAKE A FEW OF THE MESSAGES/LEAFLETS PRINTABLE FOR A HOME PRINTER (ie not too much solid blue ink that will use it all up).

At least that way, we won’t run out and can start dishing out a few to friends and neighbours.

The 2 big/main things I see for this election, is making YES voters aware of Alba, and aware of the wasted SNP2 votes.
And the harm that Brexit is bringing.

Converting former No voters is for the next round.

      1. I don’t do optimism to order. I need a reason to feel optimistic. A real reason. Mere rhetoric won’t do it. I’m not some child to be fascinated by glittery things. All I take from comments such as yours, Iain, is that Alex Salmond’s followers are no more prepared to engage in meaningful political debate than Nicola Sturgeon’s devotees. Look at the comment following yours. You may disown that particular simpleton. But not before their inanity has informed impressions of a party that claims to be different.

  10. Hurry up Mr Alba, or is it Aldi? I want some leaflets to deliver and we have about 20-30 people who will do the same. That will cover an area of some 30,000 voters. I don’t expect you to be totally 100% professional after only being in existence for only 3 weeks but I do expect our message to reach the majority of the electorate up to a week before May 6th.

    1. Postal votes are here now and most folk fill them out right away…so sadly that window has been missed BIG TIME

That to me is a serious error and will cost ALBA lots of possible votes

Three weeks in existence yes but plans could have been put in place months ago, so we had this important info for delivery a week or so after the ALBA Party was launched

How pathetic and sad is that, some people are so small-minded,

But on the other hand FAME at LAST 🙂

Peter is sniping from the sidelines and for sure is NOT “seeking to know more about the party and it’s plans”. by coming here and making comments.

That is quite easy to discover, and one thing ALBA has done is being totally open about its plans and the way they see how the progression to an independent Scotland should be moved up the priority list of things to do in the Scottish parliament.

Even NS knows what is going to happen, if/once ALBA has a significant number of MSP’s

OH I did forget about 1314 now that was Real Fame 🙂 Excited to see AS back and hope for another victory like the one at Bannockburn with all of us wee sma people coming out of hiding and simply voting for ALBA and that cant come soon enough for me and Scotland
