BREAKING THE GRAVY TRAIN

Breaking the Gravy Chain – The Necessity of Abstentionism.

A GUEST. ARTICLE FROM THE ISP CANDIDATE

So the Rutherglen and Hamilton West campaign is nearly over. During the past few weeks, we’ve handed out thousands of leaflets, met lots of people, had tons of conversations, made a fair few friends (and enemies) and we had an entertaining hustings with Women Won’t Wheest, which like all good hustings, had blow up chickens and a candidate blowing up at the end. It’s been a blast. And it’s been a good testing of the waters for some of our policies. ‘Why should we vote for you?’ has been the most common question. People out there are ready to engage – but they need a reason to do so.  We could give a number of answers to that, but we think that the best answer to it is our policy on abstention from Westminster. We think that is the standout reason that you should vote ISP. And that you should not vote for any party that doesn’t abstain from Westminster. Bear with us and we’ll explain why we think this is the policy that marks out the political sheep from the goats.

Let’s explain very briefly what abstention means for the MP. It means that they do not take the oath to the monarch and does not attend Parliament sittings or committees. They cannot vote in debates. They can still pursue cases on behalf of their constituents and represent them individually to Westminster on individual issues. They can have an office staff who will manage their cases and the staff can draw a salary. But the MP gets no salary – unless they take the oath and attend Parliament.

Do you remember in August 2014, that procession of Labour politicians going up Buchanan St, accompanied by the best troller of the referendum campaign, playing the Imperial March from Star Wars and shouting for people to bow down to their imperial masters? How we laughed. Fast forward a few months after the shock of the No vote and we were sending down 56 nationalists in their place. That’ll sort them out, we thought.

But it didn’t. And right now, the independence movement is reeling from that failure. Our party and others were formed as a result of it. And if we want to avoid repeating that failure, we need to understand what led to it. And to do that we need to understand our past. For we are in chains but we cannot see them.

When Henry VII was arranging the marriage of Margaret Tudor his daughter to James IV of Scotland some of his advisors were concerned that it would bring the Stuarts into the English line of succession. Henry brushed them off by saying, ‘ Our realme wald receive na damage thair thorow, for in that caise Ingland wald not accress unto Scotland, bot Scotland wald acress unto Ingland..evin as quhan Normandy came in the power of Inglis men our forbearis ‘.

Henry was right. It is the Machiavellian principle that you should never ally yourself with someone bigger than you; the bigger party will always take over the whole show. In truth, there is no deal to be had with someone bigger than yourself; they will always dominate by sheer force of numbers.

The moment James VI took the throne of England, was the moment Scotland stepped into that trap. It was a well gilded trap, with riches beyond imagining for the few at the top given positions at the English court, but a trap nonetheless. From that point onward, the direction of the flow of power went to England, culminating in the Treaty of Union in 1707.  Look at the Royal Arms where Scotland is represented by a unicorn. Everyone sees the chain attached to the unicorn but look at the collar. It’s a crown. Originally it was meant to represent the power of the Scottish king. But in truth, that is the collar round our neck. Scotland was captured by a crown and it is the crown, backed up by Westminster that ties us to the Union.

So let’s ask the question. Why can’t we pull that collar off? We the people certainly want to do so. But let’s turn the question on its head. What kind of person is attracted to a job at Westminster? The answer is simple. The same kind of person that has always been attracted; those who are in love with money and status, but not with their country. The kind of person that puts themselves first, not their people. From the time of James VI right up until the present day, those are the people who have led us. And as long as they lead us Scotland will never be free.

We’re outnumbered at Westminster. In truth it is not a democracy, but the tyranny of the majority. And as long as we stay there we are participating in our own gaslighting, in our own oppression. The first step to our freedom is to refuse to do that. We need to step aside. We need to see things plainly and also – and this is hugely important – allow others to see things plainly. On an international stage, it looks as though Scotland is perfectly happy with Westminster – because our representatives take their seats. If they don’t, then it becomes obvious that we are not.

But there have been times when the Scottish vote at Westminster could change things, you might argue. In 2019, the SNP held the balance of power. They could have done a deal to get Scotland a referendum in return for voting with the more moderate Tories to stay in the customs union. To that we would reply; so what actually happened then? They didn’t vote to do that. And the reason they didn’t is the same reason that holds us in thrall. People who went to Westminster for the money and career are not going to vote themselves out of a job.

In order to get the representatives we want, we have to ask ourselves what is the job we actually want them to do? It’s simple. We want them to settle up, not settle down. So we need people who are not in it for the money. And the simplest way to find that out, is to insist that they abstain. That way, they don’t get paid a salary. And that way, you won’t get the grifters. You’ll get someone who is genuine.

This is why we have introduced this policy. And we have done it as much for ourselves as you. Because we are tired of the grifters. We worked with these people for years, promoted them, deluded ourselves that when they got to Westminster that they would do the necessary and get us out of this union. We’re not going to be fooled again and we’re not going to let them into our party. We want grafters, not grifters. We want true believers and those in love with their country, not in love with themselves. And this is the test. Do you want money or freedom? Choose.

Westminster has its own test in the taking of the oath to the crown. It’s the same test. If you don’t take the oath, you don’t get the salary. Take the oath and you become another link in the gravy chain that ties us to the Union. So we’re doing it in reverse.

Why run for Westminster at all then, you might ask. Here’s the answer. We need to break that chain, not just for ourselves, but for everyone. Not only do we need to step aside, but we need to permanently block the high road to the Union that since the time of James VI, all our representatives have disappeared down and not returned. We are in a vicious circle, a Groundhog Day that is repeating itself and will continue to do so, until we are brave enough to put an end to it.

We know that abstentionism is not sufficient of itself to break free. There are many other steps to be taken. We need to reclaim our own constitution. We need a new model of democracy, not the Norman feudalism that was imposed on us. And most of all we need to reclaim the Scottish crown, which makes the people sovereign, not the monarch, nor the parliament. All of this is in our policies. This is why we support Salvo, that understands how important this aspect of nation building is, if we are not to become Westminster mark 2.

But abstentionism is necessary. The first step to getting out of prison is to realise you are in one. The first step to getting off our chains, is to realise that they are there. Then and only then can we break free.

The question that therefore you need to ask your representative is not; do you support abstentionism? The question you need to ask them is; how can you prove to me, without abstaining, that you are sincere? And if you cannot, then why should I vote for you?

MY COMMENTS

Colette is genuine and she has worked hard in this by election. I hope these efforts are recognised by the electorate. She could have used more volunteers but those who did answer the call deserve our recognition and thanks. It is a huge task for a small party but you have to start somewhere and ISP has certainly rose to the challenge. Colette has already won the respect of many in the YES movement and that is entirely deserved. I hope many former SNP VOTERS choose to help build a genuine alternative. They can start this Thursday.

I am, as always

Yours for Scotland.

BEAT THE CENSORS

Regretfully a number of pro Indy sites operate on the basis of censoring and blocking messages from other pro Indy sites that do not slavishly follow  one particular Party. To overcome this attack on curtailing freedom of speech many of my readers share my articles  to negate this censorship. My thanks for doing so.

LIBERATION.SCOT

We are seeking to build Liberation.Scot to at least 100,000 signatures just as quickly as we can. This is part of our plan to win recognition as an official Liberation Movement via the United Nations. We intend to internationalise our battle to win Independence and through the setting up of our Scottish National Congress will prepare and develop our arguments to win progress in the International Courts. Please help by signing up at Liberation.Scot. It is from those who sign up to Liberation.Scot that the membership of the SNC will be created by ballot.

  1. My wee Scottish heart leapt when I first read the announcement that ISP would not be participating in Westminster. If only other Independence supporting parties would stand on an abstention platform, how clear would that message be? Should the SNP succeed in ousting their EK, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP., I sincerely hope that there will be an ISP candidate in the constituency. It will save me from having to abstain from voting.

    1. I first joined ISP as soon as it was possible to do so out of gratitude from possibly not having to deface all my voting forms with None of the Above. I did that in the last Holyrood constituency vote.

    2. I can’t see the SNP MPs doing the abstention way. Most of them had £200,000+ expenses last year. This before their vast salary. They won’t give that up.

  2. A sensible article. A radical approach. One that might call some attention to the independence factor. It will not work as a route to independence in itself, unless the majority of our MPS take it.
As a lever it may be helpful. If a majority of our MPs did not take the oath they would be able to legally vote for secession. Forget referenda. Could become interesting

    1. It will be noted by the international community, there are quite a number of consulates in Edinburgh now. It shows that some in Scotland are serious and might influence our chances of Recognition when it comes down to it.

  3. Good luck with a great manifesto. (& sincere apologies to any readers if this becomes a double post rather than yet another lost to the IOT/ dodgy phone)

In its rush to judgement the HOC appears to have overlooked the fact that this by election is time barred (and therefore unlawful) until the covid enquiry is complete – not least because its very existence necessarily prejudices the conclusion of same.

Accordingly any* of the 70,000 electors who refused to sign the recall petition has standing to have it annulled (and Margaret Ferrier reinstated whether she still wants the job or not) – making popular abstentionism the perfect approach/ response to the shambles, so thank you so so much for taking it.

*Including the new/ temporary MP !

      1. Cheers Robert.

There’s normally a time bar clause in major construction contracts (among others?) to reimind the contracting parties that any claims for time and money, over and above that agreed beforehand, will be prejudiced in proportion to any failure to give the obstructing party the opportunity to correct its (perceived) delinquence.
        .
Strict interpretation of the clause is often relaxed to facilitate negotiated settlement but the principle itself is sound and, presumably, has its roots in common law equity.

In this case a representative of the people has been singled out for breaching rules that were so controversial they are currently the subject of full public inquiries in both Scotland and England .

Setting aside MPs’ fundamental right to a fair trial in consequence (including sane or compassionate judgement) the time bar principle infers that no disciplinary proceedings can be valid until (BOTH) the inquiries confirm the absence of corruption, incompetence and malice in the fearmongering.that led to such crazy rules in the first place.

      2. Thanks Stuart
Like Willie who also replied I doubt there is much chance of that getting any traction with Westminster, SNP etc

    1. Interesting comment Stuart McTavish which you might wish to expand on.

Of course the niceties of following due election process in the UK is an absolute joke. Elections are rigged in the UK.

The referendum with its rigged franchise showed us that. The First Past the Post for Westminster, the D’Hondt system for Hollyrood, the multi member transferable voting system for local government, the control of the media, the influence of the security services and Mi5 within political parties, the use of the police, prosecution and judiciary to jail political opponents, the blackmailing of politicians through sex, drugs or debt scandal, with attendant bribery, and ultimately the murder and killing of political inconveniences like Willie McCrae or Rosemary Nelson or Pat Finucane who were all lawyers, judiciary, these are all in play,

And now with the Scottish Government introducing legislation to chill free speech, the UK Tories are promoting again that the UK removes Human Rights with the UK removing itself from the 48 nation European Convention on Human Rights ( or ECHR). It’s stirring stuff. Truly is!

Free of the obligation to afford human rights the totalitarian state is able to do as it pleases. Removing the scum people that are immigrants is just the start and there are plenty more scum people that could do with a bit of removal treatment. 1930’s Germany certainly knew a thing or two about that as they marched into other countries and removed the scum – Jews. homosexuals, communists, Slavs and others not quite good enough. Off to camps for processing by carbon monoxide and or Zyklon B before rendering and up the lum, the inhumanity was unbelievable. But now we have a Westminster Government who wants to remove immigrants and their human rights. We slide ever more into exactly the same kind of country as 1930’s Germany.

And of course for the historians among us, or at least those who actually know a bit about history. over a million people died in Ireland during the Irish potato famine in the 1840’s when the British Government concluded nothing could be done whilst corn was shipped out to England as the people starved.

Or the third of the population of the Highland and Islands that shipped out to Australia and Canada in the 1860’s in Scotland’s great depopulation called the Clearances.

Maybe I have veered off a little from your comment Stuart about the Rutherglen and Hamilton by election not being quite right. It certainly isn’t and its manner of calling isn’t. It is however just another reflection of the sham system we live under.

Fascism and colonialism is like that. Stay comfortable this winter. Enjoy the largesse and care of the British State.

      1. Hi Willie, thanks for that information, I have just found out about anothher triack to subjugate indigenous people via the BBC news website! possibly because of claims by both the US and China, to Greenland (Trump wanted to buy it!).
In this context the BBC has republished on its website the harrowing stories of Inuit women who wre sterilised against their will or even knowledge, because the Danes were fearful of the Inuit population becoming too high!

This reminds me of the story of Ajuu Peter, the inuit lawyer activist, filmaker and activist who produved the fil ‘Twice colonised’ about her experience as an indigenous Inuit both in her native Greenland, under Denmark, and in Canada, under a Canadian government which banned Inuit traditional practices, such as seal hunting despite that being the way traditionally for Inuit men to provide for their families.
The result of this ban was a series of suicides of young Inuit men, including one of Ajuu’s sons, because of the stress the inability to provide for them families caused them.
I do not think Scotland has been fortunate in avoiding enforced reduced fertility on our population as it has not been necessary under the reduction in prosperity imposed by both Westminster and Holyrood govenments through their policies of denying Scots the opportunity to work in manufaturing industries suc as ship-building or renewable energy.

I am almost inclined to say that we Scots have also been ‘twice colonised’, once byt London and again by the policies of our elected ‘Stronger for Scotland’ spouting representaives in Edinburgh. They and their civil servoce cronies area Colonial force in our own country, willing to do their masters’ bidding to impoverish Scotland.

  4. I’m inclined to leave Alba at this point and support ISP – with some reluctance I might add. Alex Salmond deserves better imo. Of course, he should probably know better by now too, and abstentionism costs nothing at this stage. It may prove, indeed, to be a terrific investment – for the Scottish people (what else matters?)!

    1. You are not the only one considering that move. I await the Alba conference to see if they change anything in relation to Salvo and their current support for what is Parliamentary Sovereignty, although I sincerely doubt whether they will do so.

ISP policies are much closer to my position on Popular (Direct) Democracy , Universal Basic Income and a number of other issues. Plus they have a much clearer and direct vision on the route to self-determination and independence.

  5. You would have my vote , Colette , if I was able to give it. There’s more spirit of defiance , historical context/relevance and – an absolute rarity these days – true , unselfish devotion to the cause of Independence than has been evident in ANY other Party .

Whatever the outcome on Thursday , you/ISP have already set a precedent and benchmark every pro-Independence should seek to emulate . But , alas , almost certainly won’t .

    All the best .

  7. Here we are in UK,Ok where our dear SNP, MPs and MSP’s turn a blind eye to our deliberate impoverishment. Our economy destroyed our assets stolen, Carpetbagged by our colonial masters , heating ,electricity, gas and food all infiltratrated for the engorgement of the British elite’s . Tell me where are you to go to alleviate the evil hand of colonialism to keep your sanity in this mad world. The libraries are all closed, the swimming pools closed gyms all closed. Council theatres and arts centres closed. community centres closed .Is this not why we pay council tax. Take the rubbish to the tip you have to book an appointment on line, hard lines if you haven’t got a computer. Council s now shutting down Country car parks because there 4 thousand pound talking bins are being vandalised, surely that dont need to shut down the car park for that just remove the bins. This to me shows where money can be saved. How did it all come to this, SNP Gravy Trainers reaping the rewards from the scraps while Scotland falls to bits .

  8. Love or loathe Sturgeon she has been arrested and questioned on serious criminal matters and a current live police investigation is ongoing.

Against this background the Prime Minister of the UK has just been reported saying the following at the Tory Party Conference.

“Nicola Sturgeon wanted to go down in the history books as the woman who broke up our country but it now looks like she may go down for very different reasons.”

This statement is utter contempt for the law. It more than suggests that Sunak is party to confidential information and it very clearly suggests that he knows Sturgeon is guilty of a crime and that she is heading for jail.

Moreover with today being a by election in Rutherglen and Hamilton Sunak’s statement is clearly designed to interfere and influence the election being held today in Scotland. Sunak’s statement is a proclamation of criminal guilt on the ex SNP leader..

As I said at the start one may love or loathe Nicola Sturgeon. But for many this proclamation will well influence people against her and her party. And as for the due process of law and order why don’t we just ditch that and jail her right now. Sunak, the most senior politician in the land has just declared her guilt and that she’s going down.
