HARVIE SCAREMONGERING IS MINCE!

Many people have been alarmed by a recent release from Green Minister Patrick Harvie that he was introducing measures which would outlaw natural gas boilers leading to people being forced to move to expensive heat pump heating. As is typical of the incompetence of Green Ministers it took me less than an hour to identify that the said Minister was talking, in a technical sense, MINCE! I had requests from readers to find out about hydrogen systems, here is the info that is easily available.

What follows comes from the official website of British Gas and I commend them for providing a clearly expressed alternative that will be available to householders very soon and will provide a much more cost effective solution to the programme of Havering Harvie.

British Gas offering a practical solution. Let’s hope pensioners and others find out about this before purchasing very expensive heat pumps unnecessarily.

FROM BRITISH GAS WEBSITE.

You might have heard about the latest plans to switch the UK’s gas supply to hydrogen – and that the gas boilers we currently use will eventually be phased out.

But what does that mean for you and your home? And does it mean you’ll have to fork out for a completely new kind of boiler?

In this article, we’ll bring you up to speed with the latest plans. We’ll explain why it’s happening, when the changes are likely to start – and why it’s good news for everyone.

Are gas boilers being banned soon?

Short answer: no, not really.

You might have seen headlines about natural gas boilers being banned from 2025. But that’s just for new-build properties, not for existing homes and boilers.

In fact, as you’ll see from the estimated timescales below, a boiler you buy today will probably use natural gas for all its working lifetime.

After that, we the two main ways to heat your home are likely to be with a heat pump or with a boiler that runs – at least partly – on hydrogen.

The big switch to hydrogen

The UK government is looking at plans to replace natural gas with hydrogen gas – because it’s much more environmentally friendly.

But if this happens, it will be a gradual process that takes years, rather than something that changes all at once. And that means it shouldn’t be extra hassle or expense for homeowners. In fact, some of the biggest boiler manufacturers in the UK have promised that hydrogen-ready boilers won’t cost any more than a regular gas-powered boiler.1

Nobody knows the exact timescales, and a lot of the technical details still need to be ironed out, but the change is likely to happen in three main stages.

The first step in the hydrogen transition is likely to be introducing a 20% hydrogen blend into the UK mains supply. Most boilers will be able to use this hydrogen blend without any problems. In fact, many new boilers are already labelled ‘hydrogen-blend ready’ ahead of this first move towards hydrogen.

In the meantime, boiler manufacturers are working on a new ‘hydrogen-ready’ standard which will mean the UK can switch as easily as possible to 100% hydrogen much further down the line. The important thing to realise is that ‘hydrogen-ready’ boilers are still in development, whereas ‘hydrogen-blend ready’ boilers are widely available.

The government is currently carrying out trials to work through all the cost, feasibility and safety issues – and they’re expected to make firm decisions on what role hydrogen will play in heating the UK’s homes by 2026.

But although the timescales and exact details are still be ironed out, any switch to hydrogen is likely to happen in three main stages.

Stage 1

New boilers will be built to a new ‘hydrogen-ready’ standard, which means they’ll work with natural gas but can also be easily modified to run on 100% hydrogen. According to some industry estimates, these boilers should be available before 2025.

Stage 2

A 20% hydrogen blend will be introduced into the gas supply. Most boilers will be able to use this as normal – including all new British Gas boilers.  The rollout of 20% hydrogen isn’t expected to begin until 2028 at the very earliest.

Stage 3

If the country switches to 100% hydrogen, every new boiler sold in the UK will simply be a hydrogen boiler. If this does happen, it probably won’t happen until the mid-2040s.

Hydrogen boiler

When will the transition to hydrogen happen?

The simple answer is nobody really knows for sure at the moment.

Our best guess is that the introduction of the 20% hydrogen blend will happen within the next decade, but the switch to 100% hydrogen will take significantly longer.

This relatively slow change means most people will have updated to a hydrogen-ready boiler by the time the switch happens, so adapting to the new type of gas should be relatively painless.

It’s also important to realise that hydrogen boilers are just one part of the government’s plan to decarbonise the heating of our homes.

Heat pumps are also expected to play a key role in keeping us warm and cosy while protecting the planet too. You can find out more about them in this article.

Why can’t we go 100% hydrogen faster?

There are a few reasons.

Firstly, converting all the boilers in the UK is a big job, even if the changes needed to each boiler are fairly small.

Secondly, hydrogen boilers are still at prototype stage, so manufacturers aren’t ready to roll them out yet.

And finally, there’s the supply issue – the UK doesn’t currently produce enough hydrogen to power everyone’s boilers.

Solving these challenges will take a bit of time, but a lot of progress has been made already. So it’s possible that a cleaner, greener, hydrogen-powered future is just around the corner!

MY COMMENTS

I find this very reassuring because like many I was troubled about the future expense of Harvie’s ideas and the opportunity for this Green Minister to impose and inflict on Scotland more Green inspired madness and cost.

I should of course point out that companies, other than British Gas, will also provide a hydrogen based service and boilers but I thought the above explanation from them was particularly well written and was easy for everyone to understand rather than getting lost in the technical myriad of other sites.

Anyway, I hope my readers find the above reassuring and easy to comprehend.

I am, as always

YOURS FOR SCOTLAND.

      1. Like all other nations converting from fossil fuels there will be supports in place probably provided by taxpayer government funding cos god forbid the private companies such as British gas should support this from their unimaginable profits.

  1. Excellent article – and very reassuring.
Radical child Harvie also ignores that heat pumps do not get a good rep – as discussed in earlier blogs here – and the further north you are the more they struggle – if the gulf stream stops or stalls then a much colder winter could be our normal. Apparently folk freezing to death is environmentally friendly.

These Green incompetents are only in government because Stalinist Sturgeon engineered this with her ‘votes 1 and 2 SNP’ mince. Rather than go and join the Green party Sturgeon has car crashed the SNP. The Greens have less democratic authority than they have competence.

It is harder to prevent Westminster seizing powers from us when the SG is so utterly useless.
SNP: get your act together or go quietly into the night and let the real indy parties take over. This is shameful.

    1. The main offenders are the US, China, India and Russia – all are suffering spectacular impacts and we are just at the start of this. Scotland is as well positioned as it is possible to be I think – so yes we should be alarmed but our hearts should break for those vulnerable – and the wildlife in places of the world that just will not be ok. And yet the “leaders” in these places show no signs of panic …

  2. Thanks Iain for this post. It will reassure thousands of worried gas users. The nutcase Harvie exposed again for what he is, a self serving egotistical waste of space.

  3. Shame on you Ian. Fine you Ken that shilpit wee bachles (as my granny used to call people like Harvie) do not take kindly to any form of disagreement. Go away and wash your mouth out with lager.

  4. thats very good news. l was very worried when l read Harvey’s plan. being a pensioner l knew l couldn’t afford to danger my oil boiler. the man is just horrible for scaring people like that.
    thankyou for clarifying the matter

  5. Harvie and co. have inflicted crazy policies on Scotland and it’s not as if we voted for them to do so.

At the 2021 Holyrood election, the Greens polled lowest of the “5 main parties” as follows

    Constituency votes – 34,990 = 0 seats with 1.29% of votes cast
    Regional votes – 220,324 = 8 seats with 8.12% of votes cast
    Total votes – 255,314 = 8 seats with 4.17% of votes cast

Therefore, taking Regional votes only into account, the 8 Green Party MSPs were elected by an average of just 27,541 votes each. However, the 2 SNP MSPs were elected by 547,187 votes each.

Despite the fact that the Greens received only 4.17% as a total of Constituency and Regional polls, they have 2 Ministers and have had a massively negative influence on government that belies their popularity and electoral status. Plus, they have helped to ensure the demise of the SNP and damaged the drive for independence.

I wonder who could be held responsible for inflicting the Greens on the People of Scotland?

  6. There’s an incredible amount of wishful thinking on this new hydrogen-based economy everybody, most notably the existing oil and gas companies, are talking about. The basic idea is that existing infrastructure can be used so it should be easier to deploy. However, hydrogen being the smallest element will leak out of almost everything. There’s a lot of research on collection, storage and transportation. None of which are solved problems, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_storage. The solutions, when they are found, are also likely to be expensive. Guess who will be footing the bill?

Better housing and better insulation would go a lot further and likely cost a lot less than switching fuel sources. That would be achievable in a sensible time-frame and at least buy some time.

    1. I would second this opinion, Hydrogen gas has atomic number 1 therefore the lightest known element. Its also explosive when mixed with oxygen to make water, H2O, which is how the energy is released. This has the flurry around it of carbon capture, which also still has to be proven to be of practical use.

  7. Has this been sent to the wee green leprechaun HARVIE
    Scaremongering and thoughtless as usual.

  8. Not sure when it was, possibly the 60s but I remeber the transfer from coal gas to Northsea gas as being not that hard. The heating engineers came round and fitted all the gas appliances, cookers, fires, and boilers with differnt nozzles and that was it. Possibly we had to wait a day or so until our sector was completed and we could switch to use the new stuff.
In retrospect, I don’t remember it being much of a problem.

Yeah, the greens have a lot to answer for, SNP should pick their support much more carefully. They are responsible for a number of the SNP’s woes, and our country’s.

  10. And further scaremongering up there ^^^
The Atlantic Ocean Current is going to collapse!

“This research came from two scientists – a physicist and a mathematician – who used advanced statistical tools and ocean temperature data from the last 150 years to study the ocean currents. A July 25, 2023, statement from the University of Copenhagen explained:

The researchers calculated that the ocean current, known as the thermohaline circulation or the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), will collapse – with 95% certainty – between 2025 and 2095.

This will most likely occur in 34 years, in 2057, and could result in major challenges, particularly warming in the tropics and increased storminess in the North Atlantic region.”

TWO – just TWO scientists! It’s in the same category as the world ending in 2012!

  11. Don’t know why folks are pillorying the loon ball fascist Greens. They are the bedfellows that the SNP specifically chose.

Sturgeon and the team knew the electoral system. They knew fine well that a SNP 1 vote followed by an ALBA 2 vote would have delivered an independence super majority and denuded the Scotland of around 25 unionist Labour and Tory MSPs.

But Sturgeon aggressively promoted SNP 1 and SNP 2 delivering thereafter a minority SNP, no ALBA MSPs and the return of the many unionist MSPs who could have been cleared up.

So let us not bleat about Patrick Harvie or Lorna Slater. These loon ball policies are SNP policies. The Green only got 4.17% of the vote. They were Sturgeon’s choice. And to boot she undermined an independence supe majority.

Wheesht for independence, loon ball unpopular undermining policies, selling out on Brexit, it was all part of the SNP quisling plan. And soon they will be gone. The SNP is headed for utter wipe out.

The SNP sold us out. No one else did.
